It is a stunning piece of Art Deco design, and highlighted by the pops of colour that the introduction of the new material, Bakelite, allowed. Bakelite was developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907. It was one of the first forms of plastic to be made available for use in manufacturing. It allowed many new forms, shapes, and products to be created, and sparked the introduction of colour into home products and jewellery. In many ways, it was the colour palette of the Art Deco period.
This piece was made in Birmingham, England by the silversmith P. H. Vogel & co., and is stamped on the base. The piece is in excellent condition, and is the perfect accessory for any home bar, and for the Manhattan fan. Made circa 1930.
